Gala & Awards Night to hold November 14, 2025

Lagos, Nigeria — August 20, 2025

Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN) is pleased to announce that nominations are now officially open to the public for the third edition of the PSHAN Annual Gala & Awards Night; a national platform that celebrates excellence, innovation, and transformative impact in Nigeria’s health sector.

This year’s event, themed “Champions for Change: Celebrating Impact,” seeks to recognise individuals, organisations, and initiatives that are advancing healthcare outcomes and catalysing change within communities across the country. Members of the public are invited to submit nominations for outstanding champions who are shaping the future of healthcare in Nigeria.

Speaking on the opening of nominations, Dr. Tinuola Akinbolagbe, MD/CEO of PSHAN, stated:
“We believe that real change begins with recognising those who are doing the work to make healthcare better, more inclusive, and more sustainable. This awards platform is not only about celebrating achievements; it is about amplifying the stories of resilience, leadership, and innovation that often go unnoticed. We urge the public to participate by nominating the changemakers around them: those whose work speaks louder than accolades, but who truly deserve to be celebrated.”

The award categories for 2025 have been redefined to accommodate a broad spectrum of contributions, from well-established healthcare pioneers to emerging voices and underserved actors in the ecosystem. The 2025 awards will span 25 sub-categories across the 5 key award categories: Government MDAs for impactful public health initiatives; Media & Innovative Health Communications for excellence in health storytelling and digital influence; Indigenous NGOs, Local Healthcare Institutions & Community-Based Organisations for grassroots healthcare delivery; Individuals for outstanding contributions to health advocacy and service; and the Organised Private Sector for leadership and innovation in healthcare partnerships and innovations.

An independent panel of expert judges drawn from academia, public health, strategy consulting, development, media, and the private sector will evaluate all eligible nominations to ensure a fair, transparent, and merit-based nomination process.

Eligibility requirements for nominees include the following: they must either reside in or have demonstrable impact in Nigeria; individual nominees must be 18 years or older; multiple nominations across various categories are permitted; however, self-nominations are not allowed. Submissions will be assessed based on demonstrable impact, innovation, alignment with health equity goals, and evidence of sustainability.

Notable past awardees include the Lagos State Ministry of Health (LSMOH), recognised for a consistent leadership in public health governance; Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Assistant Director General, World Health Organisation, for his outstanding leadership in public health and pandemic preparedness; Dr. Filani Oyebanji, Honourable Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Ekiti State, for his exceptional contributions in improving health outcomes in Nigeria; Dr. Stella Okoli (OON), Founder & CEO of Emzor, celebrated for her pioneering role in local pharmaceutical development; Dr. Chinonso Egemba (popularly known as Aproko Doctor), for his digital health advocacy and grassroots education; and Healthtracka, founded by Ifeoluwa Dare-Johnson, for revolutionising access to diagnostics through technology, among others.

Selected awardees will be honoured at the PSHAN Annual Gala & Awards Night, which is scheduled to hold on Friday, November 14, 2025, at Civic Centre, Lagos. The highly anticipated gathering will bring together public and private sector leaders, development partners, and frontline health innovators to honour the best of the best in Nigeria’s health sector.

Members of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency paid a courtesy visit to the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria, PSHAN on Tuesday, October 26th 2021.On the table of discussion were matters relating to the situation of health in the country and the transformative agenda of the agency within the primary healthcare space

While welcoming his guests, The Chief Executive Officer of the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria, Dr. Tinuola Akinbolagbe explained that the role of PSHAN is principally to be the go-to business-led platform that mobilizes resources and capabilities, and leverages same to improve Nigeria’s healthcare system through Public Private Partnerships. According to her, the private sector has been more actively involved in the provision of medical services in recent years, citing the successful arrangement in the past.

She however admonished her guests to be painstaking in following through all necessary steps for a successful PPP. In her words, ‘patience is required to develop projects through the stages of PPP. Patience is also required to access private sector funds’.

Speaking earlier, the Director of programmes at the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Ogbe, listed the mandate of the agency to include the provision and regulation of primary healthcare centres across the country. According to him, the agency also partners states and Local Government Councils in providing basic health services through advocacy at the grassroot level. He disclosed that the NPHCDA had set up a PPP unit within the agency and solicited the support of PSHAN in the area of expertise and capacity building for the unit. According to him, among the recent milestones achieved by his agency is the successful handling of the corona virus pandemic and the remarkable feat of achieving a full year without a recorded case of polio in the country.

While soliciting the cooperation of PSHAN in getting the private sector to invest in the provision of mobile clinics and primary healthcare centres, he disclosed that there are currently about 400 functional healthcare centres across the country that would benefit from private sector intervention in the provision and operation of the facilities.

PSHAN’S STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH THE OFFICE OF ECONOMIC GROWTH AND ENVIRONMENT (EGE)- USAID FINDS EVEN MORE FORTITUDE.

Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy, yet its success isn’t shared equally. Seventy percent of Nigerians still live below the poverty line. Extending quality health care to the country’s large and diverse population is an enormous challenge. There are promising health organizations percolating in the marketplace, but many are still small in scale.

In the past five years, government leaders have been building public-private partnerships for roads, agriculture, and power but rarely has concerned themselves with healthcare and its outcomes.

As a not-for-profit, business-led organization founded to improve Nigeria’s healthcare system by providing accessible, affordable, and first-rate healthcare solutions to everyday Nigerians, PSHAN remains at the fore front of collaboration with the domestic and international development community to address inequities in access to healthcare services in Nigeria. This includes partnerships with The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In collaboration with Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede,

PSHAN has proactively developed the innovative Adopt-a-Healthcare-Facility Program (ADHFP) aimed at mobilizing smart capital to address inequities at the primary healthcare level. As part of efforts to harness the power of the private sector to work toward universal health coverage, the Private Health Sector Alliance of Nigeria is currently partnering and engaging with the United States Agency for International Development-(Nigeria Office) to accelerate healthcare indices in Nigeria.

Mr. Tunde Gbajumo, Deputy Chief Of Party at Nigeria Power Sector Program stated that achieving universal health coverage in Nigeria remains a joint effort involving citizens, leaders and private sector players to revamp accelerated investment in the health sector.

Also, Colin Dreizin, USAID Director for the Office of Economic Growth and Environment (EGE) reaffirmed that USAID remains committed to an evolving model of partnership with those they serve around the world. Stating that USAID recognizes creating sustainable health solutions for global challenges.
